SCC announces a very special event for Pastors!

August 9, 2016 By Becky

special-eventSCC leadership is in the process of working with Everence (using a grant from the Lilly Foundation) to plan a one-of-a-kind Pastor and Spouse Appreciation Event! You won’t want to miss this ALL EXPENSE PAID retreat. We are in the final stages of organizing this event and in order to proceed with booking the spaces, special events and travel arrangements, we need to know that there is enough availability and interest from SCC pastors to put money down for reservations.

This event will take place Monday, January 30-Thursday February 2, 2017. It is an all expense paid retreat at Lakeview Camp and Retreat Center in Waxahachie, Texas (about 30 miles south of Dallas). The conference will be arranging and paying for a charter bus to transport pastors and spouses to the camp. The bus would start with a pick-up in the Hesston area on the morning of January 30th and then would stop in at least one location in Oklahoma to pick up additional pastors and spouses on its way to Texas. The final stop for the bus, before arriving for dinner at the camp, will be at the Dallas Airport where it would pick up all the Pastors and spouses who have been flown in from South Texas. The conference will also arrange and pay for the flights to Dallas for pastors and spouses from south Texas. The group will have meals and lodging provided at the camp for three nights and two full days before departing on the charter bus on Thursday morning after breakfast for the Dallas Airport or their drop-off locations in Oklahoma and Kansas.

During the retreat Everence representatives will also be present to participate and visit with pastors as well as lead two or three informative workshops on pastoral financial topics. Workshops are not finalized but could include topics like retirement planning, clergy taxes, and personal finance. There will also be lots of time for individual recreation and relaxation in addition to events with the group that are still being determined but may include activities available at the camp or even attending an event in the Dallas area together (suggestions are welcome!).
This is a one-time event that is NOT related to the annual Pastor/Leader/Spouse Retreat on October 27-29 (although we hope you’ll attend that as well). It is the hope of the leadership of SCC that this will serve as a time of significant relationship building among ALL SCC Pastors, a chance for a lot of retreat and relaxation, and an opportunity to learn more about pastoral finances; a topic pastors aren’t often offered detailed education in. In order to accomplish these goals, participation from as many SCC pastors and spouses as possible is needed. Please use the link below to complete a form indicating your interest and availability in attending this event ASAP so that we have the necessary information to proceed. You won’t want to miss it!

Break the Vase Project

January 1, 2016 By Becky

Chinese-vase01-c-01In April of 2015 when the Executive Committee was visioning for the future of our conference, one of the things we discussed was a way to honor our pastors. We wanted to provide them with an event that was over the top, something that would help them to understand their importance in the minds of both South Central Conference and their own congregations.

We discussed the story of Mary taking a jar of very expensive perfume and breaking it over Jesus feet. She was criticized for “wasting” something that was worth over a year’s worth of wages frivolously. But Jesus overrode those criticisms, saying “You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me” (John 12: 8).

Likewise, there are times when we need to act in extravagant way to honor those we care about.

We, the Executive Committee of South Central Conference, and by the approval of this event, the delegates of South Central Conference, are going to “Break a Vase” on our pastors. The event has yet to be completely planned, but it is going to be something special. If you are a pastor, plan to attend. If you are not a pastor, but a congregation member of a South Central Conference church, encourage your pastor or pastors to go. Do what you can to enable them to go.
