Property that points to Christ
To help celebrate the Christmas season, people often adorn their houses and yards with brightly colored lights. Sports fans often fly team flags on game day to show their support. During election seasons, voters endorse candidates by posting signs in their yards. These outward displays cause me to wonder what Christians could or should do with their properties to point to Christ? For many, we do nothing, but not so for Metro Mennonite Pastor Norman Berry. Norman lives with his family in Mustang, OK. Prominently placed on the east side of his corner lot is a white painted timber whose base is surrounded by large stones. The stones are keepsakes from family land. The white timber is a “peace pole”. For now, neighbors and passersby have to ask Norman what that white thing in his yard is. In the months to come Norman plans to adorn his peace pole with lettering so people at least know what to call it. Hopefully, they will still stop to ask what it means, giving Norman another opportunity to share Jesus with his community.
